Gala Kirk - Cranbrook Tasmania

Gala Kirk was built in 1845 and is the oldest church in Glamorgan/Spring Bay Municipality. As early as 1844 a meeting was held to build a church and as many of the residents were Scots, they decided on a Presbyterian Kirk. A gift of 5 acres of land was made by Adam Amos of Glen Gala. A committee was formed to draw up a plan for the Kirk and raise funds, which included: Messrs. James Amos of Gala Mill, James Amos of Cranbrook, Alexander Reid of Waters Meeting, John Ferguson Snr & Adam Amos Jun. Many of these families still remain in the district.

Gala Kirk is now a Uniting Church Faith Community.

“It remains almost as it was built with no electricity or plumbing and pews big enough to seat whole families on each pew. It has a pedal organ which despite its age plays hymns most beautifully and a view that would challenge most city or country churches.”
