To provide some clarity a coding system has been applied where Adam has been designated 1, his first child 1.1, second 1.2 and so on. John is designated 2, first child 2.1, second 2.2 and so on. For example Adam’s second child who subsequently had a fourth child would be coded 1.2.4. The fifth child of John would be coded 2.5, and the fourth child of John’s fifth child will be coded 2.5.4.
Intermarriages common in that era complicate the coding system. For example James (1.1) married his cousin Ellen (2.2) and had 13 children. In this instance we have followed the male line and coded these children as 1.1.x, rather than 2.2.x Coding up to and including the third generation is provided on the website here. Coding beyond that is further complicated where there are a number of 1st cousin and 2nd cousin intermarriages, some of which have very complex lineages, as such the approach taken here is to simply recognise later generations as being descendants of a 3rd generation person.
